But What is Intermodal? Intermodal Transportation is simply a method by which truckload freight is shipped using two different modes of transport. In our case, short haul trucks are used in conjunction with the railroads.
How does it Work? A short haul truck will pick up the freight from the shipper and take it to the appropriate rail yard. The railroad will then load the trailer or container onto the next available train where it will be shipped to the nearest rail yard at destination. Finally, another short haul truck will pick up the freight and deliver it to the consignee. It's that simple and it is competitive with direct highway movements in most cases.
Who's Equipment is Used? Ample equipment can be provided by the railroad themselves or other third party providers. Private equipment can be used but must be specifically designed for Intermodal use.
What is the Advantage? Dependent upon service area, the greatest advantage of using Intermodal Transportation is a reduction in freight costs. In some locations, this savings can be very significant. Other advantages include a decrease of highway congestion and reduction of ecological pollution. Also, most transit times are truck (highway direct) competitive.
What does the Rate Cover? The Rate includes both truck movements at origin and destination, the Rail line haul, and standard equipment usage. Other services can be included as needed such as Lumper service, multi-stop pick-up/delivery and transloading/cross-docking. All of these services are managed by McCann's and your organization will receive one invoice from us direct.
