On March 3, 1980, President and co-founder, Bill McCann, resigned from the Missouri Pacific Railroad to become a shipper's agent. Together with his wife, Donna McCann, they established M.D. Freight Coordinators, Inc. Bringing 17 years of industry experience with them, Bill and Donna saw the great potential of the fledgling Intermodal Market. It was his belief as it still is today that not only is Intermodal Transportation a sound value, but that it can be delivered professionally and with personalized service.
In November of 1983, M.D. Freight Coordinators was granted ICC Broker of Property Authority. Then in 1984, the company joined the Transportation Brokers Conference of America (TBCA) and soon afterwards the TBCA Shipper's Association. The later affiliation was the first shipper's association established to handle international business after the Shipping Act of 1984. This organization later was known as the Shipper's Association International, Ltd. (SAIL).
Bill McCann's commitment to the industry was relentless and in 1986 he was elected as President to the Traffic Club of St. Louis. Later in 1987, M.D. Freight Coordinators, Inc. changed it's ICC Broker of Property name to McCann's Transportation, Inc.
Donna McCann, CFO and co-founder became extremely involved with the industry as well. In April of 1987, she was elected to the Board of Directors of TBCA and named their Midwest Regional Vice President. Just the next year, she was elected as Vice President of TBCA.
In January of 1989, McCann's expanded their operation by acquiring Koenig Transportation services and Balde Eagle Transportation services, Inc.
Donna McCann continued to be acclaimed within the industry and in March of 1990 she was elected as President of TBCA.
In December of 1994, Vice President Mike McCann was elected to the board of directors of the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) representing the Intermodal Marketing Division. Mike continued his involvement and was later elected to the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) board of directors.
As of 2001, McCann's operation has become completely computerized through a strong commitment in technology. In fact, McCann's was on of the first Intermodal Marketing Companies to utilize electronic billing and tracing with all of the Class I railroads. McCann's is currently conducting business through various EDI and Internet Applications. Though still keeping to the founding principles of personalized service, McCann's keeps pace with today's emerging technologies.
